My wife’s gotten dragged into this hobby right along with me the past couple years, so I’ve ended up smelling a lot of women’s niche stuff by proxy. Niche houses just do “sexy” better than most designer women’s lines in my opinion — more actual jasmine and tuberose, less generic vanilla-sugar. Here’s what’s worked for date nights in our house.
Kilian Love, Don’t Be Shy
Marshmallow, honey, orange blossom. I’m not exaggerating when I say this is probably the most-complimented bottle in our house, and we own a lot of bottles. If you want the one people mean when they say “everyone stops to ask what that is,” this is it.
Mind Games Queening
Orris and vanilla opening into aged rum and saffron. Warm, a little boozy, definitely more of an evening scent than a daytime one. Part of the same chess-themed line as Gambit, which I mentioned in the winter post — this brand’s been on a real run lately.
MFK Baccarat Rouge 540
I know, everyone’s already sick of hearing about this one. But it’s everywhere for a reason. Jasmine and saffron over amberwood and fir resin. It’s polarizing — some people think it’s just ambroxan soup at this point — but on my wife’s skin specifically it does something that none of her other bottles do.
Parfums de Marly Delina
Turkish rose, lychee, rhubarb, resting on a musky cashmere-woods base. Classic and feminine without smelling like something your grandmother wore. Good pick if you want romantic over edgy.
Nishane Ani
Vanilla, tonka, orris, with a boozy rum note running through it. Gourmand but restrained — it’s different enough that it won’t smell like every other woman at the restaurant, which honestly matters more than people give it credit for.
